On September 18, 1895 the first chiropractic adjustment was given by Dr. DD Palmer, a magnetic healer of the time, to Harvey Lillard. Mr. Lillard, a janitor in the Ryan building on the corner of Brady and 2nd Street in Davenport Iowa, was nearly totally deaf for 17 years. After the historic first adjustment, Harvey’s hearing returned. This revelation, led Dr. Palmer to theorize that nerve interference from a spinal bone out of place was the cause of Harvey’s hearing loss. He further postulated that returning the bone to a more normal position might help correct the problem. It was from this simple beginning that the chiropractic profession was born.
On this anniversary, it might be interesting to read the words of Dr. DD Palmer, the founder of chiropractic. We have presented them below.
“Harvey Lillard a janitor in the Ryan Block, where I had my office, had been so deaf for 17 years that he could not hear the racket of a wagon on the street or the ticking of a watch. I made inquiry as to the cause of his deafness and was informed that when he was exerting himself in a cramped, stooping position, he felt something give way in his back and immediately became deaf. An examination showed a vertebrae racked from its normal position. I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man’s hearing should be restored. With this object in view, a half-hour’s talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever and soon the man could hear as before. There was nothing “accidental” about this, as it was accomplished with an object in view, and the result expected was obtained. There was nothing “crude” about this adjustment; it was specific, so much so that no Chiropractor has equaled it.”
Within two years Dr. DD Palmer opened the first school of Chiropractic, today known as Palmer College of Chiropractic, on Brady Street in Davenport. It was his son Dr. BJ Palmer, who continued the school after his death. It is the son, BJ Palmer, who is given credit for growing and developing the profession into what it has become today.
Chiropractic remains to be the only health care system discovered and developed in America!
Here are a few tips I recommend to make the detox easier and less stressful:
1. Pick a detox program you will commit to. I think food-based detox programs are the way to go just because we are a busy society with many of us working 40+ hours per week.
2. Vary foods throughout the detox so you don’t get sick of them. I love salads, but I remember I got burnt out on them pretty fast when I ate them for 5 days straight.
3. Rotate in some “salty” and “sweet: foods. For example, saurkraut would be a “salty foods,” black molasses on baked squash would be a “sweet food,” and rice pasta with marinara sauce and garbanzo beans will kill any “carb cravings” you might experience.
4. Prepare yourself for an initial increase in headaches, neck pain, and muscle and joint aches. Certain people may experience toxin release in which the body may act sick as accumulated toxins, bacteria, and yeast die. I recommend naps and chiropractic adjustments during this time period.
5. After the program is completed, slowly reintroduce any foods you suspect you might have an allergy or even a sensitivity to. The most common foods would be dairy, gluten, soy, eggs, corn, and/or peanuts.

Ever shifted and squirmed in an airplane seat during a flight to get comfortable? That’s what babies have to do in a misaligned (aka, “subluxated”) mother’s pelvis during pregnancy!
To have the best chance for the healthiest conception, pregnancy, labor and delivery, a mother’s spine and nerve system must be like a well-tuned and well-adjusted musical instrument.
I’m partial to flutes, so imagine flute key that is slightly out of alignment. The pitch, tone and everything about the musical piece the flautist plays is out of harmony with the orchestra.
If we liken the flautist to the mother’s nerve system, the flute to the mother’s womb, and the orchestra to her body, here is what may happen:
- Tension on the pelvic ligaments –> twisting of the uterus –> back pain in pregnancy, labor, and delivery
- Unhealthy baby positions in pregnancy and delivery; higher chances of C-section
- Decreased blood flow to the mother’s reproductive organs and less oxygen to the baby
- Maternal stress hormones cross the placenta –>decreased digestion, growth, and immunity for the baby
- Long periods of maternal stress –> irritability, crying, digestive disorders, and long-term effects in the developing brain and nerve system extending into adulthood
Babies also can’t let you know that their spines need a checkup. I know parents want to give their kids the best start in life, and that best start begins with a fully functioning spine and nerve system.
I will speak for your babies–”Even though I’m exhausted after this whole birth thing, I need a spinal checkup NOW!”
