Subluxations, or misalignments of joints in the body, can inhibit peak performance AND your health! Chiropractors correct them like dentists correct the plaque off of teeth!

Here are the “Top 10 Reasons Why a Every CrossFitter Needs a Chiropractor

10. Your knee and ankle shake while doing a “piston,” aka single leg squat (low back/knee/ankle subluxations)

9. You miss a WOD or 2 “every once in a while” due to an injury (subluxation anywhere in the body)

8. Your “ego gets in the way” and you do everything Rx’ed and trash your back (spine subluxation)

7. You can’t “get low enough” on your wall squats, front squats, and anykind of squat-squats  (low back/pelvis/hip subluxations)

6. The knee hurts after 1-2 mile of running–in your Vibram 5 fingers, of course! (low back/pelvis/hip/knee/ankle/foot subluxations)

5. Too tired or stressed out to WOD to your max most days (upper neck subluxations)

4. Your shoulder kicks your butt during overhead squats, pushups, ring dips, etc. (neck/shoulder subluxations)

3. You round your back while attempting deadlifts (low back/pelvis subluxations)

2. “I’m not very flexible” crosses your lips.

And, for #1…

1. You want to get Stronger, Better, Faster, Quicker!

5. The 1500 times my children have fallen just learning how to walk by the age of 2 are really no big deal…even though I would be miserable if I fell 1500 times within a 2 year time frame in my 40′s.

4. I like my head sitting on my shoulders or protruding from my chest instead of sitting directly on top of my neck.

3. Why correct my son’s/daughter’s forward head posture? It just makes it easier for them to see the phone to text their friends!

2. Why would I want my family thinking better with a clearly functioning nerve system? I prefer the temper tantrums, disagreements, and difficulties with focus and concentration.

1. I played soccer, gymnastics, and football as a kid and I’m fine. I just throw my back out 4 times a year, and my neck always hurts, and I’m always getting sick with everything my kids bring home.

I love this recipe! This balanced dish of proteins,
carbohydrates, and healthy fats will leave you feeling full AND your blood
sugars balanced, which is what you should want for better health! Chow down
with some ruffage (i.e., salad) and you are good to go!

Also, if you have a few busy days and not much time to cook,
this recipe will give you leftovers that will healthfully sustain you during
those days when you need it most!

Pineapple Chicken Bake*

Serves 4

Prep time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

2 boneless skinless
chicken breasts
(Organic, grass-fed preferred; consuming animal protein
multiple times per day balances blood sugars and boosts brain chemicals
important for creating healthier, depression/anxiety/stress-free moods)

Salt and Pepper

1 20-ounce can
pineapple chunks in juice
(Check your labels to avoid the high-fructose
corn syrup that messes up liver metabolism and contributes to the
insulin-resistance  associated with
diabetes. Better yet—use fresh pineapple!)

¼ cup honey
(Purchasing and consuming honey from the area where you live helps boost your
immune system and your local economy too!)

1 tablespoon apple
cider vinegar
(Braggs Raw Organic Apple Cider recommended)

2 teaspoons curry
powder
(Contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties)

1 teaspoon cornstarch
(Corn is in many food products and is considered to be inflammatory. To
reduce/eliminate corn consumption in this recipe, substitute 1 teaspoon rice
flour)

1 Tablespoon water

1/3 cup almonds
(Contain monounsaturated fats, calcium, magnesium, and antioxidants. Beneficial
for your brain, skin, hair, moods, and overall health and vitality! They are a SUPERFOOD!)

  1. Adjust an oven rack to the upper position and heat the
oven to 450 degrees. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels and then season with
salt and pepper. Lay the chicken in a 9 X 13 inch baking dish coated lightly
    with olive oil/coconut oil.
  2. Drain pineapple chunks and reserve ½ cup of the juice. Whisk
pineapple juice, honey, vinegar, and curry in a medium saucepan over
medium-high heat. Simmer, whisking often, until the mixture has thickened, for
    about 8 minutes.
  3. Quickly dissolve the cornstarch (or rice flour) in the
water, then whisk into the honey mixture. Stir in the pineapple chunks. Pour
    the pineapple  sauce over the chicken;
then sprinkle with almonds. Bake until the chicken registers 160 degrees on an
    instant read thermometer, 15-18 minutes.

On September 18, 1895 the first chiropractic adjustment was given by Dr. DD Palmer, a magnetic healer of the time, to Harvey Lillard.  Mr. Lillard, a janitor in the Ryan building on the corner of Brady and 2nd Street in Davenport Iowa, was nearly totally deaf for 17 years.  After the historic first adjustment, Harvey’s hearing returned.  This revelation, led Dr. Palmer to theorize that nerve interference from a spinal bone out of place was the cause of Harvey’s hearing loss.  He further postulated that returning the bone to a more normal position might help correct the problem. It was from this simple beginning that the chiropractic profession was born.

On this anniversary, it might be interesting to read the words of Dr. DD Palmer, the founder of chiropractic. We have presented them below.

“Harvey Lillard a janitor in the Ryan Block, where I had my office, had been so deaf for 17 years that he could not hear the racket of a wagon on the street or the ticking of a watch. I made inquiry as to the cause of his deafness and was informed that when he was exerting himself in a cramped, stooping position, he felt something give way in his back and immediately became deaf. An examination showed a vertebrae racked from its normal position. I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man’s hearing should be restored. With this object in view, a half-hour’s talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever and soon the man could hear as before. There was nothing “accidental” about this, as it was accomplished with an object in view, and the result expected was obtained. There was nothing “crude” about this adjustment; it was specific, so much so that no Chiropractor has equaled it.”

Within two years Dr. DD Palmer opened the first school of Chiropractic, today known as Palmer College of Chiropractic, on Brady Street in Davenport. It was his son Dr. BJ Palmer, who continued the school after his death. It is the son, BJ Palmer, who is given credit for growing and developing the profession into what it has become today.

Chiropractic remains to be the only health care system discovered and developed in America!

Lights went out. Battery backups beeped. Fish tanks grinded to a halt.

The power went out at my house..

Four thoughts hit my head simultaneously as I sat at my dying computer: “What’s going on? What do I do? Should I call my husband? What would he do?”

I quickly discovered the rest of the house had no power; I went downstairs and found out it wasn’t a circuit breaker issue.

“It might not be just my house,” I thought.

The neighbors did not have power and were just as concerned and curious to the cause of this situation. Mass CONFUSION and CHAOS was happening in my neck of the woods!

I went back to my house to do my computer work the old fashioned way: paper and pen. My performance was lessened; I felt unsure as to what I should be doing or how I should be functioning.

A knock happens upon my door.

“There’s been a fire at St. Joseph’s hospital! The whole neighborhood has lost electricity!” cries the neighbor. “Who knows when it will be back on!”

Within the human body, there is a cause to a resulting effect within the body: chiropractors call the cause a “subluxation,” or misalignment of the spine causing less nerve communication, and the resulting effect being less
organ and/or body function
.

As in the example above, the fire at St. Joseph’s Hospital is the subluxation; the lack of electricity, mass confusion, and chaos at my house would be the effects. Would it make sense to keep flipping light switches or circuit breakers when the cause of the hospital fire needs to be corrected? No, it wouldn’t.

That’s what chiropractors do—we remove the cause of a person’s lessened health state so that the person can FUNCTION better and ultimately BE better. This creates not just a healthier person, but also a healthier community,
and ultimately a healthier planet.

Ok, you can wipe the weirded out look off of your face. Beets are a SUPERFOOD–extremely full of fiber, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium, vitamins A and C, niacin, biotin, and folic acid. That’s a pretty big list, huh? They also help cleanse and support the blood and liver. The liver’s responsible for cleaning out all toxins that the body encounters, anything from pesticides to alcohol to medications, etc. It takes a beating and it needs support at times.

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch beets with greens (see above for all the good stuff found in beets!)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil, divided (should be in pretty much anything you cook; the darker the better; this monounsaturated fat type is heart-disease fighting and bad cholesterol fighting)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (one of the world’s greatest antioxidants; cook  with it as much as possible!)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped onion (optional)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees (175 degrees C). Wash the beets thoroughly, leaving the skins on, and remove the greens. Rinse greens, removing any large stems, and set aside. Place the beets in a small baking dish or roasting pan, and toss with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. If you wish to peel the beets, it is easier to do so once they have been roasted.
  2. Cover, and bake for 45 to 60 minutes, or until a knife can slide easily through the largest beet.
  3. When the roasted beets are almost done, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and onion, and cook for a minute. Tear the beet greens into 2 to 3 inch pieces, and add them to the skillet. Cook and stir until greens are wilted and tender. Season with salt and pepper. Serve the greens as is, and the roasted beets sliced with either red-wine vinegar, or butter and salt and pepper.

“My nose is like a spicket today!” “My eyes are itching like crazy!” “HELP!”

Lakeville community members often come to Back to Wellness Chiropractic for the treatment of their allergies, seasonal or food-related. Many allergic and asthmatic reactions are caused by a hypersenstive immune system and/or respiratory system. Researchers have found that the immune and respiratory systems depend on normal communication from the brain and spinal cord to control and coordinate their functions properly.

Therefore, a misaligned neck can cause an imbalance in your nervous system function. This joint irritation could possibly produce or exaggerate asthmatic and allergic symptoms. Dr. Kayla Zirpel-Proctor recommends spinal examinations to Lakeville area community members to determine if chiropractic care can reduce their allergic and asthmatic reactions.

Additional lifestyle areas Dr. Kayla specializes in and recommends for her practice members suffering from allergies are:

  •  Paleolithic Nutrition: We are genetically designed to consume the diet of our ancestors.
  •  Detoxification Program: We spring-clean our houses-the same should go for our bodies! Our bodies can accumulate toxins that stress our immune system and lead to allergy-like symptoms, such as headaches, runny nose, sinus congestion. etc.

Wellness_MedicalWhen the body heals and maintains itself well, there is another level of health that goes beyond “asymptomatic” or “pain-free” which reveals an opportunity for vitality.

What’s the main difference between wellness care and standard medical care? Wellness care seeks to turn on the natural healing ability, not by adding something to the system, but by removing anything that might interfere with normal function, trusting that the body would know what to do if nothing were interfering with it. Standard medical care, on the other hand, seeks to treat a symptom by adding something from the outside – a medication, a surgery or procedure.

Inside Out vs. Outside In

If a patient has high blood pressure, a standard medical approach would be to choose a drug that lowers blood pressure, and ask the patient to take the drug. This may serve to lower the blood pressure, but ignores the underlying cause that is making the blood pressure high, and runs the risk of side effects complicating the person’s recovery. Whether it’s a nutritional issue, faulty control by the nerve system or a manifestation of stress, the medication could decrease the blood pressure, leaving the problem causing the symptom of high blood pressure unaddressed.

The Wellness Approach

Wellness is a state of optimal conditions for normal function… and then some. The wellness approach is to look for underlying causes of any disturbance or disruption (which may or may not be causing symptoms at the time) and make whatever interventions and lifestyle adjustments would optimize the conditions for normal function. That environment encourages natural healing, and minimizes the need for invasive treatment, which should be administered only when absolutely necessary. When the body is working properly, it tends to heal effectively, no matter what the condition. When the body heals well and maintains itself well, then there is another level of health that goes beyond “asymptomatic” or “pain-free” which reveals an open-ended opportunity for vitality, vibrant health, and an enhanced experience of life. This is true for mental and emotional health as well as physical health. While some people may suffer psychological disorders, creating an atmosphere of mental and emotional wellness will address all but the most serious problems.
